I started carving eggs in January of 2005. After the Christmas season, I took a break and began playing with a simple design, the turtle. I do a really nice one on a kamani ornament, so I took that design, put it on an egg and voila! It sorta just came together and I was off and running! I got so caught up in this new canvas, that I totally put my other work aside and jumped in feet first! As I was working away and loving every minute of this, I happened to be looking thru the newspaper one day and saw this article about a Biennial Show coming up in Waimea, themed EGG! Well, I was thinking that maybe I could come up with something and enter. A couple of days later, a friend down my road called me to ask if I'd seen this article about a show about eggs. I told her yes and she said I'd be a fool not to enter, considering what I had been doing. I entered 3 eggs and they all won the Waimea Arts Council, New Artist Award. Part of my award included the scheduling of my very own month-long show in December, 2006, in Waimea at the Firehouse Gallery. Then, in October of 2005, I again entered 2 eggs in Gary LeMaster's International Egg Carver's contest and took a respectful 1st in Novice Filigree and a 3rd in Novice Relief. By then, the fever had increased ten-fold and was I ever starting to become truly addicted to this new art. In October of 2006, I again took 3rd Place Experienced Carver in Experienced Filigree. (picture of egg to the left) Since then, I have been a featured artist at Koehnen's Interiors during First Friday of the Month -- November of 2005 and April of 2006, as well as being featured in Hawaiian Airlines Magazine -- Hana Hou's April/May issue of 2007. I was also honored to be featured on the front page of our local newspaper -- The Hawaii Tribune Herald, Easter Sunday Edition 2008, after my trip to the White House to see our State egg presented to the First Lady. Big Island Weekly News also published an article on my work and trip, and in addition to all that, was featured on Channel 8 News (NBC) in Honolulu, Easter Sunday Evening News. WOW!! I never imagined that all this would happen in just 3 short years. Needless to say, I've truly found my Passion and the doors continue to open and I keep running through, loving every moment, meeting so many different people and most of all.......... Sharing the World of Egg Art with everyone I meet. My egg creations are available at: Koehnen's Interior's -- Downtown Hilo Kilauea Kreations -- Volcano village |
